My Camera is my Excuse For Adventure Series. Randsburg, CA Ghost Town (Youtube Video blog)

I'm always amazed at the adventures I have when I get my camera out of the bag and travel; I wish I could get more people to do the same.  Sitting on the couch watching TV?  Nope...not today! Just grab the camera and march out the door...you'll be amazed at the world waiting for you.  Sometimes, I never even get my camera out when I arrive at my destination.  Sometimes I never make it to the destination at all as the journey is really the objective...the camera is simply the excuse. Don't misunderstand, I take my photography/printing seriously. It's the people I meet on the trip that become so interesting and in many instances have become lifelong friends.

You'd never know this Gallery existed in the middle of a Ghost Town. The Hoot "Smith" Gallery in Randsburg CA was a surprise to me. An even bigger surprise was to find my images on the wall and actually selling a few prints!

Gary showing me some ore that was last brought from deep below by the mine. Sat there since the day it closed long ago.  Some chunks still have a little gold.  I'm rich...or is it fool's gold?

This adventure began a few years ago when I started shooting seriously.  I was simply looking for some fun places to shoot within 2 hours of LA and came across Randsburg, CA.  (Yelp review)  "A Living Ghost Town" placed slightly north of Mojave seemed like a great place to start. Population about 50 but has a museum and post office.  I love the old towns and really enjoy the personalities of the people residing in them.  Each individual seems to have a very unique story. BUT...you have to get out of the car and shake some hands.  In this town, if and when a door is open, stop in and say hi to the local business owner...all are very friendly.  The trick is "when they are open"...you just never know...LOL.  Weekends are best by far as most places are closed during the week. So that's just what I did, shake hands on my first visit to Randsburg and was surprised at this outcome. That's what this video blog is all about.  Not the end result but rather a slice of an ongoing Randsburg adventure with my new friends.  And this is all because I got my camera out of the closet and walked out the door.

The video is called Galleries, Gold, Steaks and Snakes and I felt like a budding Huell Howser (California's Gold TV) making it.  Guess you'll have to watch the YouTube Video below to figure out why but Huell I'm not for sure.  On my second visit I met Randall "Hoot" Smith, the owner of the same named Gallery (Tripadvisor review).  He's an accomplished painter and had put together his own gallery including his work with other local artists. But wait there more...now he's opening a pub next door, The Black Horse Tavern (Fall 2017).  On my third visit I came with a great photographer friend from LA named Bob Young and Hoot asked if we would like to put some of our images in his gallery.  Sounded like a really fun idea...so Bob and I jumped at the chance.   Little did we know how amazing this would turn out.  It's been a really fun ride and actually already sold some images.

The video blog is not a photography lesson but rather a photography adventure and I hope to do more of these.  I'm showing in a fun gallery, sold some images, met new friends, explored some mines (Gold) and can't wait to go back for Old Western Days September 16th 2017. I'll be there for sure as my images will still be up! (Third Sept. Sat. each year).  It starts with a 8AM pancake breakfast and is surely going to be small town fun with a gun fight, car show and artists displaying their works.

The end result...I met a really fun group of new friends for life and I hope and tried to capture this adventure on the video so I can encourage you to go out and make "Your Camera your best excuse for adventure".

I always have said My Camera is My Best Excuse for Adventure and my first day trip for photography to Randsburg California, a "Living Ghost Town" surly was one of those. A one day visit to this fun quirky town turned into adventure of A Gallery, Gold Steaks and Snakes.
